Introducing the 1st Annual North Valley Spelling Bee

On October 4th, 30 spellers from 2 local Valley elementary schools will come together for the 1st ever North Valley Spelling Bee!  This event will be an annual Spelling Bee that allows 1st through 5th graders to show off their spelling chops.
This year, students from Mayall Street Elementary and Van Gogh Charter School will come together at the Valley Academy of Arts and Sciences starting at 6:30pm to compete for the grade level championships.
“Until this event, kids in our area did not have any opportunity to compete against other spellers from throughout the area,” said Gale Gundersen, Principal at Van Gogh Charter School in Granada Hills. “Now they do.  The spelling bee fosters excellence in academic achievement among the students in the north San Fernando Valley.”
According to Gundersen, 30 spellers are registered for the competition at Valley Academy.  The winner at each grade level will receive a trophy and the distinction of having been the best speller across two schools at that grade level.
“This year, we have 2 schools competing in the North Valley Spelling Bee.  In future years we hope to have many more LAUSD elementary schools from the North Valley participating,” said Lorie Thompson, Principal of HaskellElementary School.
The event is organized by Friends of Van Gogh, the Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) at Van Gogh Charter School and is open to the public. Admission will not be charged.
