An emotional Library Makeover at Western Avenue Elementary School as Principal Bettye Johnson thanked Target and The Heart of America Foundation for new technology, including iPads, and 2000 new books!  Choking back tears, Principal Johnson said that before today there was not a book in the library added after the year 2000.  The books and the technology were old at the 102 year old school, but now everything is new again!  Principal Johnson, her staff, the students, and their families couldn’t be more grateful.  ”These students are our future,” said Johnson.  ”If we don’t give them books, what can we expect from them?”
Principal Johnson was joined by Board Member Marguerite LaMotte, Executive Director of the Office of Curriculum Gerardo Loera, and other LAUSD staff and community members for this ribbon cutting and celebration of the new space.
In 2011, Target contributed more than five million dollars to support the Los Angeles community by funding programs like Target School Library Makeovers, Target Field Trip Grants and Take Charge of Education.  The Los Angeles Unified School District is extremely grateful to Target and The Heart of America for all their efforts to promote the learning and health of our students.
