A VERY SPECIAL VISIT FROM DOLORES HUERTA!

Students at Malabar Elementary School say “Si, se puede!”
What an honor to have a visit from Labor Leader Dolores Huerta!  Huerta has worked to improve social and economic conditions for farm workers and to fight discrimination.  She worked closely with Cesar Chavez and co-founded what became the UFW (United Farm Workers).  She continues to work on improving the lives of workers, immigrants, and women.
How did this come to be?  Mrs. Rosa Serrano-Overstreet earned first place in a contest of lesson plan writing, and the prize was Ms. Huerta’s visit.  The students sang, danced, and performed a theatre piece interpreting the book “Side by Side” by Monica Brown.
She spoke about the importance of education, respect, self-worth, and service to the community.  Staff, parents, students and community members were all inspired by Huerta’s presence.  She spoke about the importance of education, respect, self-worth, and service to the community.  Staff, parents, students and community members were all inspired by Huerta’s presence.  Principal Jorge Rios said, “It was an honor to have a historical icon visit Malabar and inspire our entire community.  We are extremely grateful for the visit.”
